Carmine Superiore is a tiny medieval village perched on an outcrop of rock overlooking northern Italy’s beautiful Lago Maggiore. It is home to the Chiesa di San Gottardo, a gem of the 14th and 15th centuries, covered with newly-renovated frescoes painted by Masters of the Lombardy School.
There is no vehicle access to the village. Instead, residents and visitors alike leave their cars at lake-level in Carmine Inferiore and walk up the steep and winding path through woodland, with breathtaking views of the lake and the Swiss Alps at points along the way. Sensible shoes recommended. From Carmine Superiore, it is possible to walk to Cannero Riviera and other villages south, north to Molinesc and Cannobio, and up to Viggiona and beyond.
The idea behind this site is to make a collection of writing and images relating to Carmine Superiore. We would like it to include, for example, interviews with the remaining few people who were born and grew up in the village, stories of daily life here, memories of those who came here for holidays, perhaps, or who helped restore the village from the 1970s onwards. Details and memorabilia from the village’s millennium celebrations in 1975 would be particularly welcome. We would also like to publish restaurant and accommodation recommendations (as far south as Verbania, as far north as Ascona). Finally, we would like this site to be available in Italian, German and English and are looking for translators. If you would like to help in any of these ways, please contact louise@carminesuperiore.it.
Visitors, please, sign our guestbook, by leaving a comment on the guestbook page. It’s good to know you were here, and we’d be happy to hear any suggestions you may have.
